# What is Shadowban?

A shadowban is an unofficial term for when a social media platform secretly restricts an account's content visibility without notifying the user or formally banning them. The account can still post, like, and comment normally, but their content stops appearing in the Explore page, hashtag feeds, or non-followers' feeds. Sometimes even followers stop seeing it. Platforms rarely confirm shadowbans publicly, but the symptoms are recognizable: a sharp, sustained drop in reach and impressions for no obvious reason. Common triggers include using banned or flagged hashtags, posting too many similar posts in quick succession, repeated TOS violations, automated/bot-like activity, or copyright strikes.

## Examples

- IAn Instagram account whose Reels suddenly stop appearing in non-follower feeds after using a flagged wellness hashtag.
- IIA TikTok creator whose For You Page distribution collapses overnight following multiple posts flagged for misinformation review.
- IIIA small brand seeing reach fall 80% on Instagram after running an aggressive follow-unfollow automation.

## Why it matters for social media

If you're shadowbanned and don't know it, you'll keep producing content that nobody sees. Recognizing the symptoms early (and understanding the common triggers) is essential to avoiding the situation in the first place. Most shadowbans last 14-30 days, but accounts that repeatedly trigger them face progressively longer restrictions.

The best protection against shadowbans is content that respects platform rules: avoid hashtags that have been mass-flagged, vary your posts so they don't look templated, never run automation that mimics bot behavior, and check your hashtag visibility regularly by viewing your post in an incognito browser as a non-follower.
