What is Impressions?
Impressions measure the total number of times a piece of content is displayed on a user's screen, including repeat views by the same person. Unlike reach (which counts unique viewers), impressions count every display instance. For example, if the same person sees your post three times, that counts as three impressions but only one reach. Impressions are a top-of-funnel metric that indicates how much visibility your content is getting. While they don't measure engagement directly, they are essential for understanding your content's distribution.
Examples
- I
A Twitter post receiving 50,000 impressions but only 5,000 unique users reached.
- II
Comparing impressions across posts to understand which content the algorithm distributes most widely.
- III
Using impression data to calculate engagement rate and click-through rate.
Why it matters for social media
Impressions tell you how much your content is being shown. If your impressions are declining while your posting frequency stays the same, it could indicate an algorithm change or a need to refresh your content strategy.
While impressions alone don't tell you much, they're essential for calculating other important metrics like engagement rate and CTR. They also help you understand the potential audience size your content is reaching.
How Velocity helps with Impressions
Velocity agents help you apply impressions across real social workflows: research, platform-ready content, scheduling, publishing, analytics, and recommendations. The full workspace helps you optimize, track, and improve performance without splitting the work across separate tools.

Reach
The total number of unique users who see your content. Unlike impressions, reach counts each person only once regardless of how many times they saw the post.
Analytics
Data and metrics that measure the performance of your social media content. Analytics help you understand what's working and what to improve.
Engagement Rate
The percentage of your audience that interacts with your content through likes, comments, shares, and saves. It measures how compelling your content is.
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
The percentage of people who click a link after seeing your content. CTR measures how effectively your posts drive traffic to external destinations.
Algorithm
A set of rules a social media platform uses to decide what content to show users. Algorithms determine the order and visibility of posts in a feed.
