What is Reel?

A Reel is Instagram's short-form vertical video format, modeled on TikTok and capped at 90 seconds. Reels live in their own dedicated tab in the Instagram app and are heavily prioritized in the main Feed and Explore page, which gives them dramatically larger organic reach than static posts or Stories. The Reels algorithm surfaces content primarily based on watch time, shares, and saves, with much less weight on follower count than the Feed algorithm — meaning a Reel from an account with 100 followers can outperform a Feed post from an account with 100,000. Reels are now the default growth lever on Instagram for creators and brands.

Examples

  • I

    A small business creating a 15-second 'how it's made' Reel that reaches 200,000 non-followers in a week.

  • II

A creator turning each blog post into a 60-second Reel summary, treating Reels as a top-of-funnel.

  • III

A brand running a hashtag challenge using Reels to source user-generated content.

Why it matters for social media

Reels are the single highest-reach format on Instagram in 2026. Brands and creators who post Reels consistently grow followers 3-5x faster than accounts that only post static images and Stories. Skipping Reels means leaving the platform's biggest distribution lever on the table.

Reels also have the longest content shelf-life of any Instagram format. While Feed posts decay in 24-48 hours and Stories disappear in 24 hours, a successful Reel can keep accumulating views for weeks or months as the algorithm continues to surface it.
